The best part about picking up a new hobby is telling everyone you’ve done so, becoming incredibly invested in it (both financially and emotionally), and then giving up three weeks later to the immense relief of your partner and mates, who have already grown tired of you dropping freshly learnt terminology from said hobby into conversation. Then the second-best part is listing all of the gear you bought online for half the price you paid last month.
I was speaking to [former pro] Greg Henderson about it, he was saying in the last few days of the Tour de France his max heart rate would be 15 beats less than it was at the start. Because he was just that fatigued. Obviously in the Tour de France, you cant take a rest, but amateurs can.
If all of that feels too restrictive, and you’ve got an appetite for more, then doubling up is an option – with two bike rides a day, or a bike session and time in the gym come the evening. Double days are fantastic, because you get two releases of endorphins and testosterone. It means you can get two hits in one day.
Cycling is for everyone – that’s the beauty of it. Anyone with access to two wheels can jump on a bike, breeze around the city or country and enjoy all the delights the velocipede can offer. That being the case, there are also some pretty key things you learn if you don the lycra a few moons earlier than the stereotypical road rider.
