Pro athletes might be able to string five, six, seven days back to back no problem, because a lot of it is generally more steady state. Once within race season, the intensity and travelling causes a lot more fatigue, so they would need a rest day.
The (often mis-)perception is that cycling is reserved for those advancing in years, but on rare days you might catch a glimpse of the mythical creature – a cyclist in their mid-20s. While running around interviewing pros at a recent cycling event, a flattering member of the public asked “are you training to be a journalist?”, to which I responded “no, I am one.”
